These are excerpts from mail posted in 1999 that will help understanding the pictures. I have posted these now (2/10/01) as a result of inquiries I have had into fuel pump replacement information.
Some months back I had a code 55 and traced it down to the secondary fuel pump. I replaced it with an Airtex E3904 which required that the electrical connector be modified to fit.
The instructions called for cutting off the old connector and putting on a wide spade design. I decided not to “cut” anything but instead fashion a male to female extension that would adapt the two.
(UPDATE: I changed to the PERFORMANCE ELECTRIC Part # P240KC over the Airtex)
Symptoms:
Low pressure on the fuel rail. (<43psi) and/or engine shutting down after about 30secs of operation. It will restart then shut down each time.
Procedure:
Disconnect battery.
Remove tank cover lid. Plug filler tube with rag.
Remove hoses to pump assembly. Find connectors tucked up under and disconnect.
Remove the 8 bolts holding the assembly to the tank.
Carefully pry the assembly loose then lift up and rotate. The key to getting the assembly out is to alternate between CCW and CW as you come up with the unit. This is also accompanied by tilting forward and backward at times.
The next few pics show the CCW and CW and upward movements.
Careful when you get the unit up this high. There is an arm that sticks out that has the float on it.
Note the green tie-wrap that holds the connector on. I added this since the connector was almost off.
Close up of connector.
Expected Result:
The fuel pressure will be > 45psi
