Replacement only. I purchased the rebuilt pump from Schucks Auto. They buy the reman parts from www.cardone.com but you will not be able to buy direct. ( part # 20-801)Aug 28, 2008The power steering pump started making intermittent noise in the spring of 2008. Based on descriptions from others on the registry list of noise followed by catastrophic failure I did not want to continue using this failing pump. I ordered and had in hand the replacement pump and just waited for a day that was comfortable to do the work. It's always better to be able to do work on the car at a time of my choosing instead of wondering when the failure will come and force the issue. Below you'll find basic time saving info (Removal/Install) and some detail for the special tool needed for removing the pulley from the pump. Removing the pulley was not trivial. The rest of the work was the usual grind: drain the coolant and ps fluid, disconnect and move a few things out of the way.
#1 - First and most notable, I chose to remove the horn to get a better shot at the upper radiator hoses. I will say up front that doing this almost lead to cross threading the attaching screws when putting the horn back on.
#2 - Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the radiator and also the two short hoses going to the engine then push the hose assembly out of the way. Next use a 1/2 ratchet to relieve the tension on the serpentine belt and slip it off the PS pulley. Disconnect PS hoses as needed. I left one end of the low pressure side attached to the pump.
#3 - When removing the bolts from the PS assembly don't forget the one sneaker bolt. I say that because it is mounted perpendicular to all the rest of the bolts. It goes threw the AC compressor. The bolt is shown below.
#4 - Drain the PS fluid and build yourself the below pulley puller. It is made from two large washers with 1 inch center hole and six 1/4 inch bolts and one 6 inch long 3/4 inch bolt and nut.
#5 - The other option is to call Napa and wait 4 days for a $45 kit that includes the puller and installer. The installer is nothing more that a bolt, nut and washer. The only thing you'd need really is the puller.
#6 - Shown are the three parts that comprise the PS assembly: bracket, pump and reservoir.
#7 - Assemble the new pump with the other two parts. NOTE: you will need to do this at the engine. It is like assembling a boat in a bottle. You need to place each piece side by side and in order before fishing the first bolt through them. Four bolts go into the block and they go into the bracket. One goes through the AC compressor and then into the bracket.
