January 28th, 1990 I went to Phoenix AZ to teach Corvette
Specialist Classes. I came home April 8th, 1990. After I
got to Phoenix Grace Inn, a few days later the Morrison
truck and crew showed up at the hotel. They had just broken
the 24 Hour Endurance Record. Not many people knew they
were trying to do this. Jim Perkins from GM and a lot of
magazine people showed up. I had known Tommy Morrison when
he was doing the Escort 24-Hour races and Challenge races.
All 1991 cars left the plant with a 24-Hour Endurance Record
label on the rear glass.
When I retired January 29th, 1993, (after 30 years), Mobil
Racing and Tommy Morrison wanted me to travel with Wayne
Carter taking a Sebring car, and the Record Run car all over
the US to promote Corvettes and Mobil Oil.
I joined Wayne at the Knoxville TN car show in March 1993.
Chris and I got there about midday Friday. It started
snowing, and snowing, and snowing!!! It quit snowing the
next morning with a total of 19" of snow.... They were not
accustomed to this much snow and it shut down the whole town
for 3 days. Wayne and I finally got out of Knoxville on
Tuesday. It took 10 hours to get to Atlanta due to the road
condition.
When we got to Sebring FL for the 12 hours of racing, we put
the Record Car and 88 Sebring Car on display in the
infield. It started raining, and raining, and raining!!!
They had to shut the race down due to 6" of water on the
track....... That was a first for the track. We finally
got everything dried out.
Then we were told we were to go to the Kansas City Expo
Corvette Show. We headed North and arrived in Kansas City
at the Howard Johnson Hotel. After checking in, I told
Wayne the people in the parking lot and lobby looked like a
motorcycle club. We found out that night on the TV news
that they were having the 1st National Street Gang Peace
Summit meeting in our hotel...... This tour starting with
19" of snow wasn't looking good. We moved to a different
hotel the next day. After the show we were told to go to a
show in Brookings SD, John Heinnicy's home town.
After arriving in Brookings we unloaded the two cars and put
them in the Chevrolet dealership's show windows for the show
the next day. We checked into the Holiday Inn next to the
dealership. A storm came up with a lot of rain and wind.
After the storm was over, Wayne and I went back to check on
the Record Car and the 88 Sebring car. We found the entire
front plate glass windows were blown out, along with our
Mobil Oil displays. The Record Car didn't seem damaged too
much; but, the 88 Sebring car was covered with broken
glass. We had just had a tornado go through!!! I thought,
"What a trip!!!" The local Corvette club put plywood over
the windows and cleaned up as much as they could. We had
the show the next day.......
After the Brookings SD show we headed to the San Diego CA
Expo show. NO, we did not have an earth quake in CA.... I
was expecting one!!!
It's now the middle of May '93. On the way back from CA
Wayne took me to Fort Stockton TX, and I got to ride around
the 7.7 mile track; but, not in a Corvette just a van. I
can imagine going around that track at 190+ MPH....
